EGR works by recirculating some of the exhaust gases back into the engine cylinders. This means that the oxygen available for combustion in the engine is lowered so that the peak engine temperature is reduced. As nitrogen oxides are only produced in a particular high temperature and high-pressure environment, this limits the opportunities for these nitrogen oxides to be produced.
